Lucky Beer

Prologue:  I was perusing the aisles of the brand new Dan Murphy’s across the road from work, assessing their range of beers, which was brilliant; I was also looking for a six pack of something that was unusual but still BBQ appropriate.

Then I spied it – little green buddas filled with beer.

First impression: I’ve had this beer before. I remember eating food at Chocolate Buddha and drinking Buddha beers with MB many years ago.

Appearance: The beer is very light in colour like most Asian beers. Being a lager it was highly carbonated.

Taste: the taste is very high in the mouth, which is to say it’s quite bitter. It is clearly brewed for hotter climes than Melbourne was on this particular Sunday. It was refreshing, and you can see that if it was a hot night in Hong Kong this would go down a treat.

Packaging: This is the sole reason for this beer existing. Lets face it Lucky beer is really just Tsingtao in an awesome bottle. And I’m willing to admit it is awesome, fat little buddhas, a perfect vessel for beer. Of course the Buddhists aren’t really meant to drink which makes it a little odd. Then again I think that rule might be to Buddhists what sex before marriage is to Catholics, but that still doesn’t mean I want Jesus shaped condom.

Food suggestion: It has to be Asian food doesn’t it? This is a beer that cries out to cool you down, so it would counteract something spicy beautifully.

Possible Slogans: Since Carlton Dry have started using Steven Segal in their ads, I think we could break out other over the hill action star Clint Eastwood.  I see Clint asking  “Do you feel lucky, well do ya punk?” potentially of John Lyndon.

6 degrees of Norm: Where we link every beer back to Norm from Cheers (George Wendt) in 6 easy steps.

1. Lucky Beer is Chinese, as is Jet Li
2. Who was in The Expendables with Jason Statham
3. Who was in Snatch with Brad Pitt
4. Who was dated Juliette Lewis in 1993
5. Who in Natural Born Killers Woody Harrelson
6. Who played Woody Boyd in Cheers, who always called Norm, ‘Mr Peterson’

And finally a new section;

The semi-appropriate Norm Peterson Quote:

SAM: “What’ll you have Normie?”
NORM: “Well, I’m in a gambling mood Sammy. I’ll take a glass of whatever comes out of that tap.”
SAM: “Looks like beer, Norm.”
NORM: “Call me Mister Lucky.”

Ranking: Let’s have a Schooner
