Phoenix Lager

Prologue:  It is obvious to me that Tipples will take over the world one day and the water in the rivers will be replaced by beer and the people will be all be cheery, if not a little drunk. Not to mention the animals that drink from said rivers, drunk giraffes, funny, drunk angry tigers, not so much.

To do this I feel we need to expand the geographical reach of the beers tasted. So today we are opening up a whole new continent, Africa (leaving only South America untasted).

That’s right I’ve stumbled upon what is described as ‘The famous beer of Mauritius”  Although I’ve never heard of it so it can’t be that famous.

First impression: This was the second beer to stump The Brewer’s Nose.

Appearance: This beer was a pale golden colour, like a Crownie with a beautiful white head.

Taste: It had a very familiar taste, was it a Pure Blond? Was it Tiger? Whatever it was it was light and quite tasty, and got better as we worked our way into it.

Packaging: This bottle looks more Austrian that Mauritian. The phoenix on the red and white background. The very traditional European layout. I would have liked something a little more islander in vibe.

I should also mention that there was also an odd little photo of a pregnant women on the back with a line through it. This may suggest that pregnant women shouldn’t drink beer, or maybe don’t get drunk and sleep with a chick that’s up the duff, or maybe Phoenix Lager is a conceptive device (but that seems unlikely).

Food suggestion: Since it is from an island I would like to say spicy fish with coconut. But really I think this is a beer you have by itself on a beach in an effort to cool down.

Possible Slogans: You’d have to be a Dodo to not drink Phoenix (To get this joke you have to know that the dodo was native to Mauritius)

6 degrees of Norm: Where we link every beer back to Norm from Cheers (George Wendt) in 6 easy steps.
1. Phoenix was the last name of River Phoenix.
2. Who played young Indy in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
3. Which also starred Harrison Ford
4. Who was in Sabrina with Lauren Holly
5. Who in a episode of Becker called ‘The Buddy System’
6. With Ted Danson who served beers to Norm.

Ranking: Let’s have a Schooner
